Beschrijving:
Strand-recreatie in Scheveningen; tekst achterop; 'On the sands at Scheveningen'; 'One of two Illustrations of Dutch holiday timewere given, the Journal; the Dier-Gaarde, or Zoological Gardensof Rotterdam, and the annual pleasure fair in that lively commarcial city, being the subjects then chosen. A sense of more quiet and genteel enjoyment is presented in this number. The small town Schevening, in South Holland, on the coast of the North Sea, is a Fashional watering-place, much frequented in the season by the Dutch nobibility and gentry. It is but two or three miles distant from the Hague, the Royal and aristocratie capital of the kingdom, were the Court usually resides. The ladies who visit Schevening are fond of availing themselves of those peculiary shaped arm-chairs made of wickerwork, several of which are shown in our Engraving. These chairs, being cheap and light, and not likely to be much damaged by exposure in the open air, seem well adapted to the use of invalids who require more repose and shelter, when tey come out of doors, than be found upon the hard wooden benches or rickety little seats too often provided for them on the sea-beach, or in the public parks and gardens, of english watering - places. The importer of a dozen Schevening chairs would make his fortune at Brichton, St.Leonards, or Ramsgate.
